Commemorating 75 Years of NATO

The Parliamentary Centre hosted an engaging panel discussion on Canada’s role in NATO in a changing geopolitical environment and commemorated the 75th anniversary of NATO.

The Honourable David Michael Collenette, Chair of the NATO Association of Canada, began with opening remarks about the evolution of the organization and then moderated a lively and informative discussion between our esteemed panelists. Lieutenant General (retired) Guy R. Thibault, former Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff and Chairman of the CDA Institute; Fen Hampson, Ph.D., Chancellor’s Professor and Professor of International Affairs at NPSIA, Carleton University; Major-General Gregory Smith, Director General (International Security Policy), Department of National Defence; and Elinor Sloan. Professor of Political Science at Carleton University, each provided brief remarks about Canada’s role in NATO before engaging with questions from the audience to expand on their thoughts.

The panel was followed by a wine and cheese reception allowing our diplomatic, parliamentary, and thought leadership guests to deepen their relationship with one another.

Our parliamentary sponsor, Julie Dzerowicz, MP, and Chair of the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, concluded the evening by leading a toast to the next 75 years of NATO.
