Advancing Gender Equality in Security Sector in Ukraine
The Parliamentary Centre presented the results of our latest research on ‘Advancing Gender Equality in Security Sector in Ukraine’ in a special event on December 8, 2021. The research is a part of our PASS Ukraine project in partnership with the Agency for Legislative Initiatives.
The analysis highlights contemporary needs and gaps specific to gender equality and security sector reform. This is part the Rada’s work on security and defense legislative design. They are also responsible for implementation and oversight. The findings reveal the high workload of the parliamentary secretariats and often lack of gender equality expertise lead to the fact that gender analysis isn’t undertaken routinely. To address this, the study suggests engaging with the CSOs and building on their specialized knowledge on gender equality and SSR. Findings of the report will be publicly available soon. This work will contribute to advancing gender equality in the security and defence sector in Ukraine and will further support Ukraine’s place in the Euro-Atlantic family of democracies.
The invitation-only event attracted a strong show of interest and support with 47 participants including Anita Vandenbeld, Member of Parliament of Canada, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development, Oleksandr Korniyenko, First Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Olena Kondratyuk, Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Chair, Committee on European Union Integration, Verkhovna Rada, a diverse group of gender and security sector experts, and a wide variety of civil society and development partners from Canada and Ukraine.
PASS Ukraine aims to promote peace and stability in Ukraine by supporting the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to play its central role in formulating, implementing, monitoring and reforming security policy. This project is made possible thanks to the support of the Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPs) of Global Affairs Canada.
The Parliamentary Centre will continue to support the Rada as it works to strengthen its procedures for the functioning of Temporary Commissions of Inquiry and the handling of confidential information.
