February 28, 2022. The Parliamentary Centre joined fifty other democracy organizations from around the world today in condemning Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, a sovereign democratic nation. In a statement released by the Global Democracy Coalition, the Centre and its partners repudiate Russia’s breach of international law and international agreements. Together, we recognize Ukraine’s courageous path to democracy in the face of hybrid threats.
“This is a pivotal moment for democracies and democrats all over the world to stand united in support of Ukraine, its people, human rights defenders and democratic institutions.”
The statement calls on the international community to protect the people of Ukraine and alleviate the humanitarian consequences of the invasion. It also calls on Russia to immediately withdraw its military forces from Ukraine, to de-escalate and choose dialogue and diplomacy to end this unnecessary and irrational bloodshed
The Global Democracy Coalition first convened in December 2021 around the first Summit for Democracy. The Coalition is composed on dozens of leading democracy assistance organizations from around the world.
